Poker Strategies

If you consider all of the hands a player is likely to hold in a given situation in poker, then you know that player's range in that spot. There is a general sense of strategy at the poker table in any given situation based off of each player's range, and whether those ranges are strong, weak, or balanced. A strong range holds a lot of strong hands and few weak hands. Similarly, a weak range holds a lot of weak hands and not very many strong hands. A balanced range, on the other hand, holds a ratio of strong to weak hands that makes it difficult for opponents to play correctly because it's too hard to figure out what the player is likely to hold. Finding the right poker strategies in different situations requires knowing what kind of range you hold, and what kind of range your opponent holds at every stage of a poker hand.

Suppose you hold a weak range and your opponent holds a strong range. Because your range is weak, and your opponent's range is strong, if your opponent bets, then you're going to be folding the vast majority of the time. As a result of his range being so strong, your opponent will have a really hard time getting you to pay him off with his good hands. If instead your opponent made his range weaker, and had a balanced range instead of a strong range, then he would put you to difficult decisions when he bets. As you can see, against unbalanced ranges, the right poker strategies are usually very clear.

Sometimes once you figure out the best poker strategies in a certain situation, you'll decide that you need to make your range weaker or stronger to properly adjust. To make a range stronger, there are two things you can do. First, you can add strong hands to your range, which seems like the obvious answer. However, you can also remove weak hands from your range. This is easily overlooked, but has just as large of an effect on your range's strength. Along similar lines, you can make a poker hand range weaker by adding weak hands to your range or removing strong hands from it.

At all points during a hand, after every decision on every street, you should take a moment to consider what your range looks like, and what your opponent's range looks like. Only after you've made these considerations can you determine the relative strength of your range and your opponent's range, and figure out the correct poker strategies.
