BlackJack Strategies
Blackjack is somewhat famous as being the only casino style game where the player can stand an almost even chance of winning against the dealer. Although the house still has an advantage, it is much smaller than that if other games like roulette or slots.
Advanced blackjack strategies can be very complicated and circumstantial. However, the basic blackjack strategies are fairly simple and can greatly increase your chances of winning.
The goal in blackjack is to get closer to 21 than the dealer. All players and the dealer are dealt two cards, and can ask for as many more as they’d like. Number cards have their own value, face cards are worth 10, and aces are worth eleven or one. Going over 21 “busts” you, meaning that you lose the round and your bet. It’s important to remember that you’re only competing against the dealer, not other players.
Typically, a dealer is forced to hit, or get extra cards, until he hits 17 or higher. Keeping this in mind, the first think you should do when playing is see what the dealer has. The dealer always keeps one card hidden until the end of the round, and always plays after all the players. Usually, you want to assume that the dealer’s hidden card is a 10, since it’s the most common value. So, if the dealer’s hand shows a 10, he probably has a twenty. On this assumption, you probably want to “hit” until you get to 20 or 21.
The ideal situation is for the dealer to have a 4, 5, or 6. This makes it most likely that the dealer will go over 21 and bust, meaning that all players automatically win. If the dealer shows one of these, you should stop hitting once you get to 12 or higher.
Other important blackjack strategies include knowing how much to bet. Usually, it’s best to set a limit for yourself at the beginning of the night. Then, bet each round a small and constant fraction of your allowance. Don’t get taken over by emotion; play the odds and try to win over time. This way, even if you don’t walk home with a ton of cash, you can at least spend a lot of time having fun.
